The institute has more than 2000 active researchers working in almost all frontiers of Science and Technology. Many known personalities like C. V. Raman, H. J. Bhabha, Vikram S. Sarabhai, J. C. Ghosh, M. S. Thacker, S. Bhagavantam, S. Dhawan, and C. N. R. Rao have been closely associated with the institute. Besides formal education and research, the Institute has been playing an active part in offering short-term courses to scientists and technologists in service.

The JRD Tata Memorial Library better known as the Indian Institute of Science Library was established in 1911, and is the best library for Science and Technology in India. The institute provides many facilities, which includes well-equipped health care center, housing facility to faculty members, placement services for students, hostel and computation facilities. The institute also has a fully equipped gymkhana, a well-maintained swimming pool, cinder track and an indoor badminton, billiard and table tennis court.
